Battle System
Since this is an rpg, I was wondering what type of battle system it would have. My suggestion would be to use one from a pre-existing game such as Final Fantasy. We could go with the Active Time Battle system which was used in the majority of FF games, or we can try the Conditional Battle System used in FFX. What do you guys think? Should it even be turn based at all?

Re: Battle System
I don't know about copying another game, but whatever we write will probably be similar to another game, just because some types of battle are simpler to program than others.

Re: Battle System
Last time we discussed it, the consensus seemed to be game mechanics like Final Fantasy Tactics.

Re: Battle System
We're really talking about battle mechanics here. The coding discussion is in another thread.

Re: Battle System
I've never played FFT, so could someone explain exactly how the battle system mechanics work?

Re: Battle System
It's really cheap, go buy it. It took me years to figure out, but once I got it, it was the best thing ever.
Re: Battle System
I don't have the time to figure it out, especially since I'm horrible at video games, lol. Is it really so hard to explain?

Re: Battle System
Check on gamefaqs.com. The FFT section has a very detailed battle mechanics guide.

Re: Battle System
yes acutally. you start out as either a chemist or squire. as you use your skills, you gain job points toward your current job or a related job. if you have enough jp you can "buy" skills to use. also, when attacking, you have a certain range of tiles you can attack, and sometimes you can use jp to buy the ability to extend your range. you equip certain kinds of skill to certain slots, which allows you to multiclass and totally customize your character. i had a sweet monk/geomancer combo that could punch you from across the map. :p
Re: Battle System
The entire job system branches out into new jobs when you hit certain levels in prerequisite jobs. Squire unlocks the path of meelee warrior jobs while chemist unlocks magic-using jobs.
As you change from one job to another, you change the characters attributes (power, magic, speed etc). But the real flexibility is mixing and matching abilities you've acquired. For example, you can have a knight who can cast white magic.

Re: Battle System
That sounds like a really cool battle system. I may have to go out and get the game after all.
I'm not sure how it would look in code, though. I can try to get something working during this coming week - maybe just a little thing to keep track of stats and upgrades and whatnot.

Re: Battle System
Really hard. lol. I'm setting up my player classes for this sort of system, and my magic class is starting to come about. ^__^
Re: Battle System
Can you show me what you have, or at least an outline of the methods and variables you're using?

Re: Battle System
Do we still have the SourceForge account? Or Google Code, or something like that? I think that would be easier than searching through old forums. That, and I'm just too lazy to find anything other than your Player class. XD

Re: Battle System
We do have the SourceForge account, though, not much is up there as of now. We need to come to a definite decision on how we want to handle the sharing of all the source code. Any ideas?
