Multiple Endings/Branch Points
It looks like consensus is growing that there should be optional sidequests and recruitable characters. How do we feel about:
1) Multiple endings based on key decisions in the game.
2) Branch points in the story (like you could kill a character you defeat or spare them, which would affect the rest of the storyline).
Mind you, too many branch points would reach geometric complexity really fast. So we should only have a few, if any.

Re: Multiple Endings/Branch Points
To be honest, as much as I like open ended gameplay and what not, I would think for now we should only stick to only one or at the most two endings. Maybe once we get through or during the process we can add more, but I don't want to bite off more than we can chew.
I feel the same way about sidequests and recruitable characters as well.

Re: Multiple Endings/Branch Points
I was just thinking that. Actually, I've always hated the recruitable characters thing... whenever it's been done, you're just dragging around luggage with firepower. There's no real add to the story. That's why I wanted the fight between Demios and Sebastian to be your time to choose between them, because either choice would effect the story. My immediate instinct upon seeing this thread was the following quote: "Two endings... no more."
Re: Multiple Endings/Branch Points
Yeah, any more and the game script would resemble a CYOA story.

Re: Multiple Endings/Branch Points
I for one, think rpgs should be really diverse and open ended, but i agree that we should probably focus on one branch point/ending for now. And when we reach the point where we have solid content in all areas, then it we could think about adding more.

Re: Multiple Endings/Branch Points
NT, not everybody here speaks in coding terms I would think mostly only developers would get that haha.
Re: Multiple Endings/Branch Points
The game actually does have multiple endings. If the player doesn't finish a chapter or dies, the game will have an end point, possibly a cut scene with the results of the failure?
Just a thought.
Just a thought.

Re: Multiple Endings/Branch Points
Like Chrono Cross. But it should be altered every time you reach a point of critical change. I hated dying in CC and constantly seeing the same ending thing.SixOfEleven wrote:If the player doesn't finish a chapter or dies, the game will have an end point, possibly a cut scene with the results of the failure?

When you die, you should like go to heaven or hell, and then you;ll have to fight your way back to the world of the living

Re: Multiple Endings/Branch Points
There are games where that actually happens, like in Taskmaker, an old Mac game. But you can always have the option of reloading an older save.

Re: Multiple Endings/Branch Points
well it wouldnt be hard to make side quests that didnt change the story line but gave you special items, money, etc

Nah, that wouldn't be that hard to do as long as there isn't a whole bunch of them. Perhaps if we give this game a open world kind of gameplay, we could design a system which reads files that explain the side quests to the game. Would add some user created content possibility. So you know what I mean :
[title]Whatever title
[reward] 1231203 golds
[waypoints]
[1]Go fight the whatever
[2]retrieve the something
[3]bring back the something
Or something similar (like XML, not that crappy thing right there).
Just a possibility.

Re: Multiple Endings/Branch Points
Yea, like golden chocobos or something. Not chocobos per se, but you know what I mean.
Re: Multiple Endings/Branch Points
Okay, here's how I conceive the branch points:
1) First divergence: Sebastian and Demios argue over a course of action. Sebastian favors a tactical approach, while Demios favors impulsive behavior. Xero sides with one of them. Whomever he sides with gets +1 Friendship point and the other gets -1 Friendship point. Prior to this point both counters are set to 0.
The next scene depends on whom was chosen: Sebastian's path is easier with the random encounters while Demios' is harder. But the storylines converge from there and proceed the same after that.
2) Second divergence: Sebastian and Demios have a falling out and prepare to fight each other. Again Xero has to chose a side. Whomever he allies with gets +1 FP when they win and the loser gets -1 FP.
At this point the FP score determines the last chapter and the ending of the game:
Demios +2, Sebastian -2: Bad ending. Sebastian runs off, and is turned by Penumbra into a vampire. The party eventually has to fight him as a boss. He chooses to die rather than live as undead (maybe he simply walks into the sunlight). After she is defeated, Penumbra is executed. Instead of of Penumbra, Randale the Bloody acts as the guide to the dark world. He is killed (?) in combat. Although the Concordian's plan for global domination is thwarted, Effluvia desires revenge on Aetheria and the two countries fall into a new war. In the postlude, Lot visits Sophia's grave and expresses regret as he prepares to march off to war again.
Demios -2, Sebastian +2: Regular ending. Demios runs off instead, and Penumbra uses dark magic to bring out his lycanthropy. Like Sebastian, he has to defeated in combat, but he is not as uncomfortable in his beastial state as Sebastian would be as a vampire. After her defeat Penumbra is imprisoned for life, held by chains of silver. Again, Randale acts as the guide to the dark world. After the defeat of Mater Obscura, he decides to return to rest in his tomb. Concordia is defeated but Effluvia and Aetheria remain locked in a cold war. EDIT: In the postlude, Lot visits Sophia in prison and finds her completely broken, convinced that he is Margrave and Cassie is Bethany.
Demios 0, Sebastian 0: Good ending. It doesn't matter whom Xero sided with first, as long as he sides with the other the second time. This time Seabstian and Demios fight to exhaustian, but are willing to bury the hatchet at Amira's insistence. Both remain in the active party. After she is defeated, Penumbra is imprsoned, but when the heroes have to venture to the dark world, she is freed to act as a guide. Sophia/Penumbra becomes an active party member. She has to deal with the heartbreak of fighting against Mater Obscura. After Concordia is defeated, Effluvia and Aetheria form an alliance to keep watch over the elders. Lot and Sophia are married. Sebastian and Amira have become an item.

Re: Multiple Endings/Branch Points
I love it. Though, if you could clarify one part:
When you choose to side with Sebastian twice (regular ending) does Demios end up dying off? Or simply disappear from the story?

Re: Multiple Endings/Branch Points
No, he is able to cope with his lycanthropy. He simply lives in the wildlands of the plains of Effluvia, which is where he was born. But it's still a crime that Penumbra cannot be exonerated from.

Alright, just wanted to make sure. I got the feeling that is what you meant by your first description, but wanted to clarify things.
