Well, I'm not really familiar with GBA programming, but it could be interesting. It does have its graphical limitations, though, something a PC program does not have. For example, you could put some nifty 3D effects into a PC game, but not on the GBA.

In the long run, having it on GBA requires an emulator, all of which behave slightly different. I'd say a PC game is slightly more secure. Of course, if this is going to be programmed in DirectX or other ms software, emulation has the advantage of being cross-platform.

For the record, I'm Danny. Smile

As for GBA programming, this should get you started if you're interested:

Cool, didn't know about that. I think I'm siding with GBA now, though I won't mind a PC game. I'm going to read through it now. I'll (hopefully) come out with some kind of technical demo in the future.

I vote for PC, for selfish reasons: I don't have a GBA.

You don't need a GBA - You could use an emulator. It's what I do when I make stuff for the GBA.

VisualBoy Advance is my favourite. Smile

PC

Post by WolfCoder on Thu Mar 26, 2009 10:37 pm

PC is a very optimal choice. Even better if it's open platform. There's plenty of game studios and engines out there, I strongly urge you to focus on the RPG part of the RPG rather than every single little detail that makes up a game engine. If you want you can use mine, there's other 2D engines out there as well.

Even better if you use a 3D engine, I'm talking about where the system is done and you just need to create artwork and the RPG script itself.

I've had some experience writing games for the GBA and due to it's nature, I wouldn't recommend it. It's too involving and you guys won't have fun making the RPG if the programmers are caught up busy with the engine while the artists and scenario planners are wondering when there's going to be an actual game.

I didn't know you actually did one for GBA, I just thought you did PC... Thanks for the advice ^___^

I would vote PC. Though I don't have any experience developing for the GBA I would think GBA would run out of memory pretty quick limiting you to smaller levels, less sprites, less graphics etc. Plus there are less people that would play the game if it is on the GBA. PC has a vast population of potential players of this game. One thing I would suggest is making a GBA port after having a finished working PC version.

The GBA is VERY LIMITED. You only get 32k of fast RAM and I think 128k (or 256k) of slow RAM (EXRAM). Plus you're limited in video memory as well, you really have to scale stuff back and write optimized code to get it to even run acceptable. It's a nightmare writing all those addresses and trying to get it all to work- PC is a far better choice in every single category since this is an indie/hobby project.

WolfCoder is right. I've now tried both GBA and SDL programming, and I definately vote for SDL. Not only is it more difficult to write directly with the hardware, the addresses are also far to confusing to remember and the GBA is definately very limiting (though it has some cool functions like page flipping and mode 7).

SDL, on the other hand, is easier to understand and the code looks a lot more manageble (although it's still giving me some problems here and there).

Isn't SDL for the GBA?

SDL is an implementation like OpenGL. Using a library like that for the GBA severely limits your capabilities and slows down an already slow system. Mind you, this is only a 16Mhz processor system. I wrote a library that already draws normal sprites with frames, scaled, rotations, fading in/out (alpha), and if you actually felt like it- GLSL shader functions.

What I really meant to say was SDL to program graphics for PC and the Tonc library for GBA.

I definitely vote for PC. As far as resources go, there are far more out there for PC development and I am willing to bet we could get a better following for our game if it is PC as well.

Additionally, I think most of us have more experience as far as PC development goes, anyways.

Yeah. As long as it's not live download like an ORP, this would work better for me too. I'm not versed in programming, but who knows what I might find in there by taking a look.

Maybe only the first couple of months, to advertise it. After that, they'll have to give a few bucks to buy it.

How do you feel about a chapters trial? You can release an unlimited free demo of like a battle sequence or a dungeon.
